[Hong Kong] Strawberry Picking & Guong Shing Ice Cafe

I often hear my overseas friends complain that there is not much outdoor activities in Hong Kong.  This is so not true.  Ever since I moved to Hong Kong my weekends have been packed with outdoor activities and I still haven't explore everything Hong Kong has to offer!

Two weekends ago, I invited a few of my friends to join me to go to Fanling to pick strawberries from an organic farm.  Besides strawberries, they offer other produce and if you want, you can even job shadow them for a fee.

Although the farm is all the way in the heart of New Territories, the transportation is very convenient.  You take the train to Fanling Station and change to the minibus 52B and it will take you all the way to the entrance.  From there, you pay an entrance fee of HKD$10 and you can pick all the strawberries you want at HKD$80 per pound.  No eating is allowed though.

The farm is of a decent size and we went on a bright and sunny day so it was extra fun :)  The hardest part of the trip:  Which strawberry should I pick... hahaha!!! (and how to stop yourself from picking too many!)

As I keep reminding my friends not to pick too many... I ended up with the heaviest basket -.-|||  It was definitely easier said than done... But how do you resist these organic and fresh strawberries?

Other than strawberries, the farm also offers other types of produce and activities - such as papayas, tomatoes, bananas, Luo Han Guo, etc.  There is even a lamb and rabbit pan where you can feed the critters.  The strawberry season is typically from December to April and I would recommend visiting in the morning to avoid the crowd.  Overall, it was a very nice half day weekend activity when you want to getaway from the city but don't want to travel too far!

Although there is a snack area within the farm, we decided to go to 廣成冰室 (a Hong Kong style café) in Sheung Shui (上水).  This place is pretty famous and there was a crowd when we arrived.  We waited approximately 30 minutes before we were seated and my friend highly recommended the red bean ice (紅豆冰) here.  I also got a pineapple bun with butter (菠蘿油) to go with my drink and it was a satisfying high tea for sure :)
